Central Costa Rica

Central Valley

Easily accessible from San Jose, the Central Valley is a beautiful region of Costa Rica and home to two active volcanoes - Volcán Poás and Volcán Irazú. In Parque Nacional Volcán Poás, you can visit the volcano observatory to see the steaming, bubbling mud and water being ejected high into the air. In Parque Nacional Volcán Irazú, it is possible to hike to the summit and if you are lucky enough to have clear weather, you can see both the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea at the same time.

Puerto Limón

Puerto Limón is the most important port in Costa Rica. This is where Columbus landed in 1502. It is a city with a strong Afro-Caribbean culture. Near to the city is Veragua Rainforest Research and Adventure Park with elevated walkways and vivarium and insectarium. There are also zip line canopy tours.

On the west coast of Costa Rica lies Parque Nacional Tortuguero. This is one of the most important nesting sites for the endangered green turtle as well as hawksbill, leatherback and loggerhead sea turtles. The park is also a sanctuary for a wide variety of flora and fauna. Access to the park can be made via a flight to the village of Tortuguero, situated within the park.
