Kakheti, which covers around 18% of the total area of Georgia, is the easternmost region of Georgia and the country’s premier wine producing area. Farmers grow many varieties of grapes here so there are numerous types of wines produced. The region has spectacular scenery from snow covered mountains to lush valleys and fields. It is possible to visit some of the wineries in the region to sample some of the locally produced wines.
Telavi is the largest city in Kakheti. Is situated on the edge of the Alzani Valley. The whole area has numerous ancient churches, monasteries and castles, some dating back many centuries.
Signaghi is a beautiful walled town that overlooks the Alazani Valley. It has a real olden day feel to it, with cobbled streets and houses from the previous century. It is also known as the “City of Love” and is a popular place for Georgian couples to get married.
