The Oriente
The Amazon basin in Ecuador is know as The Oriente. This is an area of dense tropical rainforest where indigenous peoples make their homes along the numerous rivers. Jungle lodges provide accommodation in the region where you can be woken by howler monkeys and eat piranha for breakfast.
Tena
Set in a beautiful location, surrounded by jungle, Tena is a laid back town and a great place to start some of Ecuador’s best rafting and river adventures.
Parque National Yasuni
The enormous Yasuni National Park has an absolutely amazing variety of fauna and flora and is pure tropical rainforest interspersed with numerous rivers, lakes and marsh land. River lodges provide accommodation for boat trips around the park.
Parque National Sumaco Napo Galeras & San Rafael Falls
This park is a pristine wilderness consisting of rain forest but one of the main reason tourists come is to hike to the summit of Volcán Sumaco which stands at over 3,700 metres. A vast array of birds and other wildlife can be seen on the hike. Close to the park are the San Rafael Falls which is Ecuador’s highest waterfall at 131 metres.
Papallacta
Close the town of Papallacta,situated at 3,250 altitude in the eastern Andes on the edge of the rainforest, lie Termas de Papallacta, a set of beautiful thermal pools. It is possible to visit on a day trip from Quito or stay overnight. There are also some good hiking options in the region.
