San Jose

San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica is located in the heart of the country and is home to a fascinating history, exquisite architecture, a busy nightlife and friendly locals. San Jose is the cultural hub of the country with a wide array of museums, parks and entertainment options including many good restaurants, particularly those in the Barrio Escalante area.

In the city centre, you can find Parque la Sabana, a popular green space frequented by locals. It is a great place for a picnic in the middle of the city and is home to the National Stadium where you can see a variety of sporting and musical events.

In the southeast corner of San Jose province lies Los Quetzales National Park, home to the elusive and vibrantly coloured  quetzal birds. The park situated along the Rio Savegre, spans three different types of rainforest and has an enormous variety of flora and fauna including coyotes, jaguars and tapirs.

Another area in the southeast of the province worth visiting is San Gerardo de Dota. This is a top area for hikers and nature lovers alike and is said to boast around 200 species of birds.
