Southern Armenia
Noravank
Near the town of Yegheghnadzor in southern Armenia lies the 13th century Noravank Monastery (meaning New Monastery). The monastery is included on many itineraries to Armenia, due to the beauty of it’s construction with a stunning backdrop of brick red cliffs.
Sisian
Close to the town of Sisian is the Zorats Karer archaeological site. There are a number of standing stones here dating from prehistoric times and on windy days make whistling sounds due to holes drilled into them centuries ago.
Yeghegis Valley
The Yeghegis Valley is a very beautiful region of southern Armenia, with ancient villages, churches, monasteries as well as high mountains.
Goris
The town of Goris in southern Armenia sits in a bowl shaped valley surrounded by mountains. Close to the town is a cave village that was inhabited until fairly recent times.
Tatev
The reason to visit Tatev, is to see the spectacularly located monastery. Overlooking the gorge of the Vorotan river, the monastery offers wonderful views of the surrounding scenery. The monastery was constructed in the 9th century with additional buildings added over the years. It is one of the most photographed structures in Armenia.
