Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia has a population of around 1.5 million people. It is situated on the banks of the Mtkvari River and has mountains surrounding much of the city. Tbilisi has many interesting sights and the architecture of the city hails from a variety of styles.It is a modern city however, with a metro and numerous hotels, restaurants, cafes , bars and nightclubs.
Mtskheta, one of the oldest cities in Georgia lies approximately 20 Kms north of Tbilisi at the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers. The city has some interesting sights including the ruins of a fortress dating back to the 3rd century BC as well as the impressive Svetitskhoveli Cathedral from the 11th century and the 6th century Jvari Church.
Situated approximately 80 Kms west of Tbilisi is the city of Gori and is famous as the birthplace of Joseph Stalin. The town has a museum dedicated to Stalin but the most impressive sight has to be Gori Fortress which dates from the middle ages.
